How to Clean a Leather Sofa: Genuine and PU Leather Care Guide
Knowing how to clean a leather sofa properly is what keeps it looking good for ten years instead of three. In Malaysia’s heat and humidity, leather and PU leather face problems that care guides from cooler countries rarely mention: sweat and body oil soaking into the headrest, mould spots in a closed-up house, and cracking next to a sunny window. This guide covers routine cleaning, stains and humidity for both genuine leather and PU leather, because the two need different care.
First, check which leather you have
Genuine leather is an animal hide. It has a natural, slightly uneven grain, absorbs a little moisture and needs conditioning to stay supple. PU (polyurethane) leather is a coated fabric. It has a more uniform surface, does not absorb conditioner and is cleaned more like a wipe-clean surface. If you bought from Lazio, the product name or your order will tell you, for example our Berry Leather recliners are PU. If you are unsure, ask us on WhatsApp before using any leather product on it.
One rule for both: test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, such as the back of a cushion or underneath the seat, and wait until it dries before cleaning anywhere visible.
Weekly routine: two minutes that prevent most damage
- Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Dust and grit act like fine sandpaper every time someone sits down.
- Vacuum the seams and crevices with a soft brush attachment. Crumbs trapped between cushions hold moisture and attract ants.
- Wipe the headrests and armrests with a cloth dampened in plain water and wrung out well. This is where hair oil, sweat and sunscreen build up. On PU leather, that build-up is one of the main causes of peeling over time.
Monthly deep clean
Genuine leather
- Mix a few drops of mild, pH-neutral soap (a gentle baby soap works) into a bowl of warm water.
- Dip a soft cloth, then wring it until it is only damp. Leather should never get wet enough to drip.
- Wipe one section at a time, following the seams, then go over it with a clean cloth dampened in plain water.
- Pat dry with a dry towel and let it air-dry naturally. Do not use a hair dryer or put it in the sun to dry.
- Once dry, apply a leather conditioner with a clean cloth in small circles, following the product’s instructions. Most homes need this every 6 to 12 months. Air-conditioned rooms dry leather faster, so condition more often there.
PU leather
- Use the same mild soap and warm water mix, on a well-wrung cloth.
- Wipe in sections, then remove the soap with a cloth dampened in plain water.
- Dry immediately with a soft towel.
- Skip the leather conditioner. PU does not absorb it, and oil-based products can leave a sticky film that attracts dirt. A clean, dry surface is all PU needs.
What never to use on a leather sofa
- Bleach, ammonia or all-purpose kitchen sprays. They strip the finish and cause cracking.
- Alcohol-based wipes and sanitiser. They dry out genuine leather and can dull or damage the PU coating.
- Abrasive sponges or magic erasers. They remove the top colour layer.
- Too much water. Soaking the surface lets moisture into seams and foam, and in our climate that leads to mould.
- Furniture polish or silicone sprays. They leave a slippery residue that is hard to remove.
How to handle common stains
Spilled drinks
Blot straight away with a dry cloth. Press, don’t rub, because rubbing spreads the liquid and pushes it into the grain. Then wipe with a damp cloth and dry. Sweet drinks such as teh tarik and fruit juice leave a sticky residue that needs the mild soap mix.
Grease and food oil
Blot off as much as you can. On genuine leather, a fresh grease mark often fades as it slowly absorbs, so don’t scrub it with water. If it stays, ask a professional leather cleaner. On PU, wipe with the mild soap mix and dry.
Ink and dye transfer from jeans
Treat it quickly. Dye from new denim and bag straps transfers easily to light-coloured leather. Try the mild soap mix first. Solvents can remove ink, but they can also remove the colour of the leather itself, so on genuine leather leave anything stronger than soap to a professional.
Humidity, mould and sunlight: the Malaysian problems
- Mould spots: they appear when a house is closed up, such as over a balik kampung holiday. Wipe them off with a well-wrung cloth and the mild soap mix, dry thoroughly, then open windows or run a fan or dehumidifier. If they come back, the room needs better airflow, not stronger chemicals.
- Keep a gap from the wall: a few centimetres lets air circulate behind the sofa and stops damp from collecting.
- Direct sunlight: it fades colour and dries leather out until it cracks. Use curtains or blinds in the hours the sun hits the sofa, or place it away from the window.
- Aircon vents: a cold, dry airflow pointed straight at the sofa dries genuine leather. Angle the vent away.
Pets and kids
Leather is one of the easiest upholsteries for pet hair, because hair wipes straight off instead of weaving into fabric. Claws can scratch it, though. Light scuffs on genuine leather often soften after conditioning, while deep scratches need professional repair. For young children, PU is the most forgiving: most spills wipe off with a damp cloth. Leather sofa cleaning FAQ
How often should I clean a leather sofa?
Dust it weekly, give it a deep clean with mild soap once a month, and condition genuine leather every 6 to 12 months. Wipe headrests more often if the sofa is used every day.
Can I use baby wipes on a leather sofa?
Avoid them for regular cleaning. Many contain alcohol, fragrance or oils that build up on the surface or dry out genuine leather. A cloth with water and a drop of mild soap is safer.
Why is my PU leather sofa peeling?
Peeling usually starts where skin touches the sofa most, on headrests, armrests and seat fronts, because sweat, body oil and heat break down the coating over time. Harsh cleaners and direct sun speed it up. Regular wiping with a damp cloth slows it down considerably.
Does the Lazio warranty cover cleaning damage?
